Hey y'all.
I read on John Strait's web page, I believe, that he wanted to learn Adverse Weather
Cycling. We must have swapped karma when we talked on the phone from Frostburg, because it
wasn't supposed to rain. After huddling under a tree getting drenched, I figured I'd be
warmer riding with my legs under the fairing. So John, there's no trick to it - just ride
and get wet.
I had two flats on the C&O just west of Hancock. The first was a perfectly sculpted
tire tearer that open a 1 CM radial tear in my expensive high pressure 20" Primo rear
tire. John at Pathfinders in Hancock set me up with a wider 1.75 inch, 40 psi tire that I
inflated to 50. We had to move thewheel back a few mm, but it rolled freely. It bounced
over what the Primo took head on. Unfortunately, once I hit wet asphalt it threw water
strategically up the back ofmy helmet.
Fortunately, that tire burst this morning (better now than on the road!) so I'll have
to brace the Primo and go tire shopping.
On a brighter note, the sun is supposed to shine fro the next few days, and I heard on
the news with the wether report that the ATA trail from Dawson toSmithton is now open!
Thismakes my trip a bit less uncertain.
Happy Trails!
