Former National Center for Atmospheric Research Network Engineer, Scot Colburn left from the Washington,
DC area Friday, September 4,, 1998 bound for Denver, CO. Serving as an Advance Scout for
the nonprofit National Bicycle Greenway (NBG) organization, he is helping us map
our Year 2000 bike ride across America. Colburn is backed by a nationwide team of virtual
map compilation volunteers who are carefully plotting a safe bike route for their proposed
millennium trek. Armed with a hand held computer and a GPS mapping device, Scot compiled a
powerful data base that will be used by this NBG team.
Averaging 50 miles a day in between all of his other activities, Colburn safely pedaled
through Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, Springfield, Omaha and many other cities and
towns on his way to Denver. Many NBG volunteers have pedaled with him as they have shown
him the most efficient ways through their part of the country. These volunteers and others
have also fed him and given him a night's lodging.
Scot reports that in his journey from the east coast his festive looking machine
complete with NBG flags, a fairing and one wheel trailer drew crowds and attention
everywhere he went. He completed his ride October, 18, 1998 in Denver, Colorado.
