Gaithersburg, MD, trying things out

Scot began his ride westward on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Road from the Brennan’s house in Montgomery Village, MD. By 5:30pm, he arrived in White Ferry. He hoped to ride 40 miles but only made 30. There are a lot of campgrounds on this trail, one every five minutes.

It was raining hard today so Scot didn’t ride. He is staying in a hotel until the weather gets better. Had a pizza dinner. Expects to be in Cumberland in two days. The hotel didn’t have a place for him to do laundry.

Entrance to the Paw Paw Tunnel

By 2pm, Scot was in Little Orleans. He’s hoping to make it close to Cumberland by nightfall but not likely. He blew the tire that he replaced while at Hancock and while fixing it, he met a guy that’s also going to Cumberland. They had burgers for lunch while waiting for the rain to stop. His gear is already covered with dust so he doesn’t think protecting it from mud with a trash bag would do it any good. They continued to ride until the Paw Paw Tunnel. The tunnel was not tall enough for riding so they walked their bikes. It took 15 minutes to get to the other end and it was very dark in the tunnel. They camped right outside the tunnel. Scot had a tuna and noodles dinner which he shared with his friend.

Entering Cumberland

Scot and the guy he met at Little Orleans started their ride to Cumberland at 7:30 am. They were able to catch the 11:30 am train to Frostburg. Scot got off the train to continue his bike ride north to Meyersdale, PA while his friend stayed on the train. By 5:30, Scot arrived Meyersdale. It was raining again and this time some of his gear got wet. He’s staying at a hotel for the night, bringing in his bike and all its mud in his room, and drying his gear. Unfortunately, his room did not have a phone so he has to go out to call. He tried calling me but I wasn’t home yet. He called his parents but their line is disconnected (his Dad must have backhoed the lines again). Scot’s average daily distance is increasing because the ride to Cumberland alone was already 30 miles, the ride to Meyersdale is approx. 16 miles.
